“Sanguan” in Chinese means “three functions”, as they are the gods of Heaven, Earth and Water. It is said that the Emperor-Official of Heaven bestows fortune, that the Official of Earth bestows reprieve for misdeeds and that the Official of Water solves difficulties. In Chinese mythology, their status is next to the Jade Emperor, the ruler of Heaven and Earth. The deity statues of the Three Great Emperor-Officials with golden faces are said to have been made in the Ming Dynasty.
